Dj Peril is a pioneering force in Australian Hip hop culture, with a career spanning over four decades across DJing, music production, Aerosol art, radio, live performance and vinyl culture curation.
Beginning his journey in 1983 as a B-boy and graffiti artist known as Peril, he later evolved to DJ Peril- a name now synonymous with aunthencity, longevity and innovation. He is the founding member of the ARIA Award -winning group 1200 Techniques and remains one of the country’s most consistent funk and hip hop DJs and producers.
Peril has played a defining role in shaping Australia’s urban music scene through legendary club nights including Planet of the Breaks (est. 1997) and Soulclap (est. 2002), they were the two of the longest running hip-hop and urban institutions in the country.
His influence extends beyond music. Peril was commissioned by Sony Music to create a mural for A Tribe Called Quest’s final album, We Got it from here…Thank you 4 your service and has been inducted into the Australian Music Vault as an Australian hip hop Pioneer. He also contributed to the AMV Hip hop Exhibition, documenting the culture’s legacy from 1983 to today.
A respected radio voice, Peril has hosted and featured on Kiss FM, 3RRR and Double J and has performed alongside and supported an extensive list of influential artist such as Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Slick Rick, Mariah Carey, Black Star, Run-DMC, Jurassic 5, Mos Def, KRS-One, Grandmaster Flash, Pete Rock, Talib kweli, Mobb Deep, Big Daddy Kane, Naughty by Nature, Busta Rhymes, Redman, Method Man, Afrika Bambaata, Kurtis Blow, Biz Markie, Dj Jazzy Jay, Kelis, Akon, The Black Eyed Peas, The Game, Pitbull, M.I.A, Linkin Park, The Preset, Jet, Wolfmother, and many more!
Deeply rooted in Funk, Hip-hop and rare-groove vinyl culture since 1983, Peril remains a respected vinyl first-selector and collector. He is currently the resident DJ at Bar Bambi and continues to play at Melbourne’s leading vinyl-focused venues.
